OLDEST EVER MOTORCYCLE ENTRY FOR SCHWEPPES CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE
The latest entry for the Schweppes East Africa Concours d'Elegance is the 1916 Triumph Junior motorcycle of Michael Milner-Smyth, the Chairman of the Vintage Motorcycle Club of South Africa. This historic machine will be the oldest ever motorcycle to be shown in the annual vehicle beauty contest which has been organised for the past 37 years by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club. Thanks to Kenya Airways Cargo, the Triumph will be flown from Johannesburg together with a 1929 Dunelt and a 1934 New Imperial Grand Prix racing bike for assessment by the Concours judges on September 30th at the Nairobi Racecourse. The Schweppes Concours rewards the owners of well kept cars and motorcycles with a 1.5 million shilling prize fund split through 13 car and seven motorcycle classes. The event is open to all makes and bonus points are given for age to compensate for wear and tear and the difficulty of preparing older machines. Regulations for the Concours are available from the Bob Dewar Publicity offices in Block G of Norfolk Towers, Kijabe Street. Inquiries may be made by phoning 316160, or 229793 during office hours. The email address is info@bobpr.com and the Concours website is www.concourskenya.com Meanwhile, there is growing interest in the Classic Car and Motorcycle Sale which will also be held at the Nairobi Racecourse on September 30th. The Sale is open to any car, or motorcycle regardless of condition made in 1982, or earlier. Among the cars which will be on offer are a 1969 Ford Cortina saloon, a 1959 Chevloret Biscayne and a 1963 Mercedes 190. The regulations are available from the Concours office and the Sale is limited to 30 entries on a first come first served basis. Commenting on the motorcycle entries from South Africa, Jane Njoroge, the Concours Secretary, said, "Since our event has been recognised and sanctioned by the AMU, there has been greater overseas interest. We are hoping for more entries from outside Kenya before the closing date of September 14th." She added, "The magnificent machines from South Africa are very rare and are worthy of being Museum exhibits. Watching these ancient bikes being ridden around the judging ring at the Racecourse will be a great treat for Concours spectators." "The star of the show is likely to be the New Imperial racing bike of Peter Posniak who made his first appearance at the Concours last year. New Imperial had many competition successes and between 1921 and 1936 they won six of the lightweight Tourist Trophy races in the Isle of Man." The New Imperial will be up against Rick Agagliate's 1937 Moto Guzzi GTC in the competition motorcycle class. Agagliate won the class and finished first overall with this flame red Italian racing bike in last year's Schweppes Concours. Another competition bike to watch will be the 1928 Rudge Whitworth entered by Harare based Bob Rose. The latest car entries in the Concours include the 1967 Fiat 500 of Jessica Murotto which will be competing in the class for small cars. She is a new comer and will be up against the 1972 Austin Mini of Vitafoam Products which has won this class several times. Another first timer is Peter Huth, a former racing and rally driver, who will be showing a 1948 Jeep in the utility vehicle category which has already attracted four Land Rovers and a 1974 Mini Moke.
