KMSF APPROVES 2008 SCHWEPPES CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE REGULATIONS

The Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF) has approved the regulations for the 2008 Schweppes Africa Concours d'Elegance which has been listed on the motor sport calendar for September 28th, 2008 at the Nairobi Racecourse.

The annual vehicle beauty contest will be the 38th in the annual series organized by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club for all makes and types of cars, pick ups, station wagons and motorcycles. The regulations are shown on the Concours website which is www.concourskenya.com and printed copies will be distributed to potential competitors in March.

The 2008 event will be sponsored by Schweppes for the third successive year and is titled "The Schweppes Africa Concours d'Elegance". This follows a suggestion by Roger Pearce who heads the governing board of motor sport in South Africa.

He said, "The African Motorcycle Union has already granted the event AMU status and listed the Concours on the calendar of major motorcycle events in Africa. For several years, the Concours has attracted car and bike competitors from outside Kenya and has earned continental status for the high standards of entries, judging and organization."

Roger Pearce's suggestion has received approval from the Kenya Motor Sport Federation and support from Surinder Thatthi in his capacity as the FIA Africa Region Co-ordinator. He has written to motor clubs throughout Africa to draw the attention of their members to the Schweppes Concours as an international event catering for the owners of the well kept classic, vintage and veteran cars and motorcycles.

Over the years, the Concours has attracted car entries from Australia, Germany, Mauritius, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. So far the top car award has not been captured by an overseas competitor, but the best motorcycle prize has been won once by an entrant from Britain and twice by members of the Vintage Motorcycle Club of South Africa. The name "Schweppes Africa Concours d'Elegance" is expected to boost the number of entries from outside Kenya adding to the event's status.

The Concours has been included in the programme for the 2008 African Odyssey. This will feature 20 classic cars to be driven from Johannesburg to Nairobi to be at the Nairobi Racecourse on September 28th, 2008 to attend the classiest event on Kenya's motor sport calendar. All the African Odyssey cars will be on show near the motor trade stands and several of them will be entered for judging in the Concours.

The regulations for the 2008 Concours provide for a maximum entry of 70 cars and 40 motorcycles. There are 12 car classes for utility vehicles, touring cars, rally machines, sports cars and a category for vehicles made during, or before 1940. The eight motorcycle classes cover street bikes, trail and enduro motorcycles and competition machines.

The owners of unwanted cars and motorcycles made in 1983, or earlier will have the chance to sell them at the Classic Sale which will be held in conjunction with the Concours. Classic cars on offer will be placed in the competitors' car park and motorcycles will be shown next to the bike judging ring.
